![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Irish-born Canadian novelist Emma Donoghue has reached across the chasm of time to unearth the true-life story of Jenny Bonnet in her new novel “Frog Music.” She will come to Santa Cruz on Friday to talk about her book and Jenny”s story.ĭonoghue has written eight novels in her 20-year career, both contemporary fiction and historical novels. The story was even picked up by the New York Times. Because of Jenny”s theatrical personality and her renegade reputation, the shooting was big news in newspapers all around Northern California. And, in 1876, she was shot and killed at the age of 27 while she sat in a saloon, the victim of what we would today called a drive-by shooting. Jenny was a cross-dressing French-born bohemian who sold frogs to restaurants. But in 1870s San Francisco, she was so defiantly hip as to be a local celebrity. Even in contemporary San Francisco - the home of drag queens, techie eccentrics and lifestyle renegades - Jenny Bonnet would have drawn attention. ![]()
